Retirement age regulations of the country of origin and immigrant pension decisions

The project studies how international migrants’ retirement behavior is influenced by formal pension institutions in their country of origin. A large body of research shows that regulations play a major role in retirement decisions. Other research has shown that cultural and norm-based factors linked to the country of origin can influence labor force participation and employment. The project brings these perspectives together.

The analyses combine recently collected worldwide data on retirement age regulations for women and men with individual-level panel data from a large number of countries in Europe. Our results show that pension regulations play a major role in individual decisions and that immigrants’ behavior is influenced by specific and changing formal institutions in the country of origin.
