Biography
I began studying history at what was then Växjö University College in 1993 for no other reason than finding history fascinating. It turned out to be so interesting that I have carried on. Before I was accepted as a PhD student, I worked as a secondary school teacher of history and religious studies, and during my PhD I took part-time leave of absence to work at the museum Jamtli in Östersund. In 2002, I joined Gotland University College as a lecturer and there completed my thesis In those days at that time – Perceptions of and Uses of History at Medieval Week on Gotland and Jamtli History Park (2005). Since then, I have mainly devoted myself to teaching and administrative duties as head of department, deputy head of faculty, vice-chancellor and acting vice-chancellor at Gotland University.
In the book Him, her and the Dog: The Feminisation of Swedish Dog Sports 1918–2017 (2018), I describe how dog ownership and dog training have been recoded from masculine to feminine. I have also written about adult education within the Svenska landsbygdens studieförbund. My research now focuses primarily on polar history, mainly on Swedish Arctic expeditions and perceptions of the polar regions.
