Ingela Lanekoff

Short presentation

Professor Lanekoff works with innovative mass spectrometry and specializes in developing and applying advanced mass spectrometry techniques for spatial and cellular metabolomics. Her work includes developing surface sampling capillary electrophoresis (SS-CE), direct infusion probe (DIP), pneumatically assisted nanospray desorption electrospray ionization (PA nano-DESI), ion-to-image (i2i) data-handling software, single-cell metabolomics, and silver-doped methods for isomer differentiation.

Biography

Ingela Lanekoff is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry, European Research Council (ERC) grantee, and head of the Center of Excellence “Chemical Mechanisms of Life.” After earning her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Gothenburg University, Sweden, in 2011, she pursued postdoctoral training at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the United States. In 2014 she moved to Uppsala University on a junior project grant to start her independent research group and was promoted to Professor in 2022.

Research

Professor Lanekoff’s research is centered on designing, building and applying advanced mass spectrometry for analysis of metabolites and lipids in biological systems, such as thin tissue sections, cellular extracts, and individual cells. With the aim to enhance sensitivity and specificity, key innovations from her work include: surface sampling capillary electrophoresis (SS-CE), the direct infusion probe (DIP), pneumatically assisted nanospray desorption electrospray ionization (PA nano-DESI), and unique mass spectrometric methods for isomer differentiation using silver ions. Additional developments include single-cell metabolomics and the ion-to-image (i2i) data handling software. Through these tools, Professor Lanekoff continues to push the boundaries of mass spectrometry, to reveal the complex chemistry of biological systems in health and disease.
