Short presentation

Tommy Carlsson is an associated researcher at CIRCLE and U-CARE, http://www.u-care.uu.se/. The goal with U-CARE is to increase wellbeing among patients and close ones living with somatic disease. Tommy is a PhD, senior lecturer and an associate professor (docent) at the Swedish Red Cross University. Tommy is a a registrered midwife and a specialist nurse in intensive care with a clinical background at Uppsala university hospital.

Biography

I have post-graduate education in intensive care, caring science, and sexual and reproductive health. I hold a PhD in Medical Science, and since 2021 I have been an Associate Professor in Nursing at the Red Cross University College.
I lead research projects conducted in collaboration between CIRCLE, U-CARE, and the Swedish Red Cross University College. One project focuses on health and well-being among refugees with diverse sexual orientations, romantic relationships, gender identities, and gender expressions (often referred to as LGBTQ+). Another project focuses on health and well-being among women with experiences of forced migration and mental ill-health. Overall, my research is conducted in close collaboration with people who have lived experience of forced migration, serving as representatives of the target groups.
I have obtained approximately SEK 20 million in external research funding as principal investigator and approximately SEK 7 million as co-investigator.
I have authored approximately 50 peer-reviewed publications in international journals.
I currently supervise two doctoral students enrolled at CIRCLE and U-CARE.

Research

My research primarily focuses on understanding the life situation, health, and well-being of refugees after their arrival in a host country such as Sweden.
Psychosocial health is a central theme in my research.
In my research, I focus on the co-development of interventions aimed at promoting mental health and well-being through peer support among people with lived experience of forced migration.
Another strand of my research concerns health informatics and how health-related information should be designed to meet the needs of the population.
I also conduct research specifically related to sexual and reproductive health.
