Research
Dr. Serdar Temiz is an Associate Professor in Industrial Engineering and Management at Uppsala University, where he studies how technology reshapes the rules of the game for businesses, institutions, and the people they serve.
His work sits at the crossroads of digital entrepreneurship, technology management, and ecosystem governance. A common thread runs through all of it: how do new technologies get adopted, who benefits, and what structures ( open or closed, centralised or distributed ) determine the answer?
In practice, this means investigating questions that matter well beyond academia. How does AI change the way entrepreneurs build and scale businesses? What stops hospitals from adopting 3D printing at the pace the technology allows? Can decentralised networks genuinely shift power away from platform monopolies and toward citizens?
His current research spans five interconnected areas:
AI & Digital Entrepreneurship how artificial intelligence transforms business models and innovation systems in both public and private sectors
Additive Manufacturing the operational, regulatory, and institutional barriers to 3D printing adoption, with a focus on healthcare settings
Decentralised Networks & Democracy how Web3 infrastructures, the fediverse, and open data architectures can redistribute platform power and support civic participation
Social & Ethical Innovation how entrepreneurs use technology to address systemic challenges while building ecosystems that remain accountable to people, not just markets
Open-Source & Platform Strategy how distributed frameworks reshape corporate strategy, value chains, and market dynamics
Dr. Temiz has been teaching across Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels, with courses related to management, innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability , digital entrepreneurship, and leadership.
