Erik Thosteman

My thesis examines Swedish-American newspaper publishing in Chicago between 1850-1920. I ask questions about how the Swedish-language press in Chicago worked and how it changed over time. Focusing on issues of race, ethnicity, gender and nationality, I examine how group-making processes took place in the context of changes in immigration flows, immigration policies, and increased nationalism toward the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
