Biography

I trained as a speech language pathologist at the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2002 and have primarily worked with the rehabilitation of speech and language in acquired brain injuries focusing on developing intensive aphasia rehabilitation. Master in Speech Pathology 2018 at Karolinska Institutet with the clinical study Can Neurorehabilitation Reshape Brain Networks in Chronic Aphasia with Apraxia of Speech?

PhD, Uppsala universitet 2025: Feasibility of introducing intensive comprehensive rehabilitation of aphasia and apraxia of speech in Swedish healthcare

Research

Intensive rehabilitation of aphasia and apraxia of speech - neuroplasticity, speech and language outcomes and implementation in Swedish public health care

The main supervisor of the project is Ellika Schalling, co-supervisors are Ingrid Henriksson, Trandur Ulfarsson and Åke Nygren.

The research project is carried out as part of an international collaboration between the Karolinska Institutet and Professor Marcelo Berthier's research team at CIMES, Universidad de Malaga with the overall aim to evaluate and create optimal intensive rehabilitation of aphasia and apraxia of speech after stroke.

The brain is plastic and improvements can be made many years after brain injury, but the mechanisms related to recovery, reorganization, brain plasticity and the implementation of intensive rehabilitation need further studies to optimize speech-language rehabilitation.

The MIRAA-study (Multimodal Intensive Rehabilitation of Aphasia and Apraxia of speech) aims to study the national implementation of a new treatment model for acquired impairment of language (aphasia) and speech (apraxia of speech) following stroke.
