Research
I research galaxy evolution by studying the stellar populations of our Milky Way galaxy and nearby dwarf galaxies in detail. Stars hold a historical record of their original home galaxy in their atmospheric composition. I use the compositions, movements, and ages of large samples of stars to identify and characterize the many stellar populations found in the Milky Way today. Some of these stars formed inside the Milky Way, but some formed in other galaxies and were brought here through galaxy collisions. I combine models of galaxy chemical evolution and big surveys of the nearby Universe to understand how the Milky Way and its neighbors came to look to way they do today.
