For my PhD, I will be looking at the importance of photoheterotrophy for bacteria in lakes. Photoheterotrophs can utilize light energy in other ways than through photosynthesis, and still require organic nutrients from their environment. There is a lot we don't know about this process, especially in freshwater environments, and I look forward to finding out more!
