Biography

I’m a Professor of Greek, specializing in Byzantine literature. After completing my PhD from University of Gothenburg (2001), I took up a postdoctoral research position at the Freie Universität Berlin (2002–4) before coming to Uppsala as Assistant Professor. In 2006–10 I was a Pro Futura fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study. I have spent periods at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris (2008–9 and 2014), served as Adjunct Professor at the University of Oslo (2016–17) and as Director of the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (2019–21). In the spring 2024, I was a visiting scholar at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington. Since 2024, I serve as a judge on the panel for the literary Runciman Award.

Right now I am Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Languages with responsibility for research and doctoral studies (2023–26).

My overarching research interest concerns different processes of literary adaptation and translation, within and across languages. Much of my work has been focussed on Greek and Byzantine literature, especially fiction. I also have an interest in historiography and other forms of literature written in Greek primarily from twelfth-century Byzantium and often with a narratological perspective. In recent years I have published translations into Swedish from English, French and Greek. Last but not least, I’m interested in all forms of storytelling, including contemporary narratives of academia.

In 2020–24 I was editor (with David Ricks) of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (CUP). I’m currently editor of Studia Byzantina Upsaliensia, associate editor of Brill’s Narratological Commentaries to AncientTexts, and on the editorial boards of, among others, Ancient Narrative, Cultural Interactions in the Mediterranean, FABULAE, JOLCEL (Journal of Latin Cosmopolitanism and European Literatures), Scandinavian Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, and Transcript.
