Forskningen fokuserar på att studera hur en personcentrerad grundläggande vård som är patientsäker kan uppnås inom kirurgisk vård för patienter som har komplexa sjukdomstillstånd och i pre- och postoperativ vård. En central utgångspunkt i forskningen är den sårbara och utsatta patienten och dennes närstående och hur vården i denna komplexa vårdmiljö kan utformas så att patientens grundläggande vårdbehov säkerställs. Ett tydligt fokus är att studera betydelsen av en etablerad vårdrelation och patientens delaktighet.
Bedriver och deltar i en rad projekt nationellt och internationellt med fokus på tillämpning (i klinik och utbildning) och utveckling av ramverket Fundamentals of Care.
Ett annat fokus är kompetens och professionsutveckling för sjuksköterskeroller på olika nivåer samt behovet av handledning och stöd i yrket. Ett forskningsprojekt fokuserar på utvärderingen av ett handlednings- och mentorsprogram på Akademiska sjukhuset som i verksamheten benämns som ’Professionssteget’. Ett nationellt samarbete utvärderar framgångsfaktorer för professionell utveckling för specialistsjuksköterskor i kirurgisk vård.
Tidigare projekt och samarbeten både nationellt och internationellt har fokuserat på utveckling och implementering av Nurse Practitioner inom kirurgisk vård i Sverige.
