Dissertation project:

Textual environment and use of texts in a rural court during the 16th century (working title)

The subject of my thesis is the use of texts in the rural court in the Swedish province of Dalarna. The analyses are based on textual references occurring in the court protocols. These refer to two main types of text; written documents (e.g. economical and legal decrees, charters, and accounts), and the medieval Swedish law, landslagen.

The written documents are introduced and used by ordinary people as part of their dealings and interaction in court. The thesis seeks to capture the use of and conditions for using written documents within the court.
The law, on the other hand, is used as part of the judicial activities and therefore tightly connected with the legal, institutional domain. With respect to this second text type, the thesis seeks to explore the function of the legal references within their context of the protocols; and it also seeks to comprehend the connection between the reference and its concrete textual source, landslagen.
