Anna Foka leads new research cluster on AI and cultural heritage

Anna Foka, Professor of Digital Humanities at the Department of ALM, has been appointed Principal Investigator (PI) for a new research cluster on AI, cultural heritage, and collective memory.

WASP-HS is investing SEK 142.3 million in five new research clusters that will explore how artificial intelligence affects humans and society. The initiative spans five years and aims to build expertise in AI and autonomous systems within the humanities and social sciences. The clusters will provide interdisciplinary research environments for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and guest scholars, while also strengthening Sweden’s international research collaboration in the field.

One of the clusters, "AI Futures of Culture and Memory," focuses on the impact of AI on cultural heritage, collective memory, ethics, and inclusion. Anna Foka is the Principal Investigator of this cluster, which is coordinated from Uppsala University. The project brings together researchers from several Swedish and international institutions and aims to develop human-centered, inclusive, and sustainable AI systems.
