Applications and admissions
General admission requirements
To be admitted to the doctoral program in economics, applicants must have achieved:
- passing grades in courses equivalent to at least 240 ECTS credits (four years of full-time studies), including at least 60 ECTS credits (one year of full-time studies) at the advanced level (master's level),
- or have acquired equivalent knowledge in an alternative manner either in Sweden or abroad.
Specific admission requirements
In addition to the general admission requirements, applicants must also have:
- at least 90 ECTS credits in economics (three terms of studies) or have acquired equivalent knowledge in an alternative manner either in Sweden or abroad.
The admission requirements must have been met at the time of admission, although they do not necessarily have to be fulfilled at the time of application. Applicants who expect to have met the general and specific requirements by the beginning of August are welcome to apply.
When can you apply?
The application period opens in December, and the deadline for submitting your application to the doctoral program is February 1st.
How is your application evaluated?
Applications are evaluated based on several criteria, including personal statement, essays, course grades, GRE scores, academic references, etc. See the admission requirements listed here alongside.
Application
An application to the doctoral program in economics must include:
- Personal statement (maximum two pages) where you describe why you want to be admitted to the doctoral program in economics at Uppsala University and indicate the research areas that interest you the most.
- Certified copies of all qualifications, including all completed academic courses and academic degrees.
- Copies of essays you have authored.
- A CV.
- Contact information for two academic references (address, email address, and telephone number).
We also recommend the following:
- We strongly recommend that applicants take the GRE test. Upload a copy of your test results in your online application and also ensure that the verified test results are sent directly to the department. GRE: school code 0247, institutional code 1801.
- We strongly recommend that applicants take the TOEFL test or IELTS test. Upload a copy of your test results in your online application and also ensure that the verified test results are sent directly to the department. TOEFL: institutional code 7996.
Application process
- Deadline for applying to the doctoral program in economics is February 1st.
- The application portal opens in December.
- A first round of admission letters is sent out in mid-March.
- Applicants who are admitted are given a deadline by which they must accept or decline the offer.
- A second round of admission letters is sent out thereafter.
Important information about the application process
- Every year, we receive between 300-400 applications.
- We will not be able to review your application or GRE/TOEFL results in advance.
- We will notify you when and if you need to submit reference letters. Therefore, you should not submit reference letters without being asked.
- You should not contact potential supervisors, as all admitted students are matched with a supervisor during their first year in the program.
If you are admitted
If you are admitted as a doctoral student at the Department of Economics, you can expect the following:
- You are fully funded from the first day.
- There are no tuition fees for the education.
- You will be provided with a furnished office and a computer. During the first year, you will share an office with two or three other doctoral students. From the second year onwards, you will share a room with another doctoral student.
