Postgraduate education

The Department of Food Studies, Nutrition and Dietetics offers third-cycle education. The third-cycle education involves a time-limited employment as a doctoral student at the department and admission to third-cycle education in nutritional science only takes place when a place is announced. The program lasts for 48 net months and ends with a doctoral degree. Basic eligibility is granted to those who have completed a master's degree or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at advanced level. Those who have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country may also be eligible. In addition, specific eligibility is required through 90 credits in food science or equivalent.

Food, nutrition and dietetics is an interdisciplinary and multifaceted research subject. The doctoral students' thesis topics therefore vary in terms of research questions, as well as the use of methods and theories, but food and health are central to all research. An important goal for the subject of food science is to strengthen professionally oriented research linked to the areas for which the department educates.

A third-cycle education includes both dissertation work and courses as well as active participation in the seminars given at the department. Usually the doctoral student also teaches at the department and is part of the college during this time. At least two supervisors are appointed for each doctoral student, one of whom is the main supervisor.
