Register-data research and GIS/Spatial Analysis

Researchers at the department make use of several different databases – a few of the more important ones are listed below.
Description
The PLACE database
The department has access to a research database (we call it PLACE) that Statistics Sweden (SCB) has compiled. The database contains individual (but unidentifiable), longitudinal registers including education, income, demography and geography for the period 1990–2014. The database also contains registers over workplaces and housing.
The use of the PLACE database is, for legal and ethical reasons, limited to department employed researchers and PhD-students. For questions regarding access and use contact the database administrators Andreas Alm Fjellborg or John Östh.
The PLACE database has been used to provide empirical background in several research articles.
MIND
The department administers a Big Data database holding information about the flow of mobile phones in Sweden.
Useful links
The variables included in the database are drawn from the data available at Statistics Sweden
Other research databases
Researchers at the department also make use of other research databases – primarily databases with geographically coded material including historical maps, transport maps/data, mobility statistics, and some remote sensing resources. For students and employed researchers many of these databases are available through the GET interface (https://maps.slu.se/get)
GIS/Spatial Analysis
Many researchers use GIS/Spatial analysis tools in their research, some of our researchers also develop GIS/Spatial analysis tools. Students and researchers are experienced users of, but not limited to, ARCInfo, Mapinfo, QGIS, EquiPop and QT modeller. Online tutorials and other GIS Extras can be found on the department’s GIS and Spatial analysis educational site.
The official EquiPop website is placed under the department domain (EquiPop).
Contact John Östh or Jan Amcoff for questions regarding GIS and Spatial analysis at the department.
