Docentship lecture - Bedour Alshaigy: "Designing Computing Education for Everyone"

The Department of Information Technology hereby invite all interested to a docentship lecture in subject Computer Science Education.

Abstract: Computing education is built on assumptions: about how students learn, how they engage with materials, and how they demonstrate what they know. But our classrooms are more diverse than those assumptions allow for. What happens when our designs do not match the students in front of us?

This lecture puts accessibility and inclusion at the centre of computing education. We will examine how choices in teaching activities, learning materials, and digital tools can create or remove barriers to learning and participation. We then turn to GenAI, exploring its potential to adapt learning to individual needs, while considering how it might reproduce existing exclusions or create new ones.

Ultimately, the aim is to move from accommodating students after barriers arise to designing computing education with accessibility and inclusion built in from the start.

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.
