A post-biological era of genetic and technological enhancement of humans, as well as artificial intelligence showcasing human characteristics, may challenge our conceptions about what it means to be human and what should give rise to i.a. rights. How should rights and legal personhood be understood in such a time? Furthermore, in light of the insights made possible by modern natural science, the normative and conceptual role of consciousness in rights theory will also be examined and evaluated from both legal and philosophical perspectives
