Bachelor's Programme in Land Management
Lawyers may not be the architects shaping tomorrow's society, but their legal knowledge plays a crucial role in the dynamic field of urban planning. Join the Land Surveying with Law programme and gain the skills needed to create and maintain well-structured communities. This comprehensive programme offers not only a legal foundation, but also a rich blend of economics, urban design, cartography and sustainable development, preparing you for a world of exciting career opportunities.
About the programme
There is a great need for legal expertise and knowledge of the formal processes of urban development. Land use is governed by legal regulation, but of course also by an economic side. Furthermore, everyone has to deal with a technical dimension where a general knowledge of technical issues, sustainable development, etc. is of great importance. Therefore, in addition to law, you will acquire relevant knowledge in economics and technology.
The programme gives you:
- a unique skills profile based on real needs for building our future society
- knowledge of the legal, technical and economic aspects of the spatial planning process
- very good job opportunities.
Built environment and property science is an interdisciplinary field of study that stems from the needs and values that govern our built environment. The field combines and integrates a large number of perspectives, methods and techniques from different disciplines, in order to provide a necessary holistic view of spatial planning from a broad purpose and sustainability perspective.
The Faculty of Law at Uppsala University is the oldest law faculty in the Nordic region and has existed since the university was founded in 1477.
Degree programme
The programme leads to a Degree of Bachelor of Social Science with a major in Built Environment and Land Law.
Programme syllabus
The programme is an undergraduate programme consisting of six semesters. The first semester focuses mainly on legal studies. The other semesters integrate and alternate law with the other subjects of the programme. The programme is organised in an order of subjects that can be said to reflect the construction of society and its natural development. The sequence also reflects the knowledge required for the various stages of development.
In the first year, you will be given an introduction that focuses mainly on law, but also includes economics, spatial planning, sustainability and technology. The introductory section also includes some more general legal areas that you will need to master before specialisation begins. These include general property law, public law and construction law with procurement.
In the second year, you will gain more in-depth knowledge of, and perspectives on, spatial planning and the environment. This includes the legal planning and property formation process and environmental law. You will also study issues in natural resources and sustainability in a broader perspective. Finally, you will learn some technically orientated elements of civil engineering.
This is followed by a section covering land access, plan implementation and compensation. Here you will study both law and economics, with the majority of the block devoted to the law of compensation for damage caused to property owners and others.
The third academic year begins with an introduction to technical surveying, and you also study business administration and special property law. The perspective is to implement and realise approved detailed plans. You also get an in-depth introduction to geographical information systems (GIS) and building information modelling (BIM).
Finally, you will study project management and communication and the entire programme ends with a degree project.
