Uppsala Mathematics Association

Uppsala Mathematics Association aims to promote mathematics in the Uppsala area. The association holds two summits a year, each with a guest lecture and fika. Further, the Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony takes place at every summit. The awards are granted for excellent results in mathematics courses.

Annual meeting, May 2026

The annual meeting of Uppsala Mathematics Association will be held on the 18th of Maj at 17:15 in Polhemsalen (10134). Luís Diogo (Uppsala universitet) will give a guest talk. The abstract for the talk will be available here on a later date.

Title: Drama in the 1990's: the triumph of Physics

Abstract: It is well known that exactly one line passes through any two points in the plane. A far more subtle classical result asserts that a smooth cubic surface in three-dimensional complex projective space contains exactly 27 lines. In this talk, we will explore counting problems of this kind, which lie within the field of enumerative geometry. We will also discuss how ideas from string theory led to dramatic breakthroughs, answering questions that mathematicians had struggled with for a long time.

The talk will be followed by the Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony, concluding the meeting.

The association would like to thank all the teachers who have submitted nominations for the Outstanding Student Awards.
