Description
How does one speak about the unspeakable? How can one convey in words the encounter with the absolute, with God? This project uses cognitive linguistics methods to explore how the metaphorics of the medieval German mystic Mechthild von Magdeburg functions as a tool to express unio mystica, the transcendent experience of oneness with God. The project aims at a deeper understanding of a linguistically, theologically, and historically important work, but also of the function of metaphors in the outermost frontiers of language.
