Description

This project analyzes political protest songs written in the age of Louis IX of France. Despite his great popularity throughout life, he faced impetuous resistance from the French aristocracy, due to his centralization of power. This resistance was expressed through sofisticated protest songs, which made use of lyrics and music of courtly love songs to critizise Saint Louis' regime.

The scientific results will be presented in a monography, which will make the first overall study of Medieval political songs, analyzing the relationship between lyrics, music and historical context to illustrate how songs could give a multifaceted and provocative expression to political resistance.
