Energy Material Physics and Applications

The research aims to understand atomic-level processes in renewable energy systems to improve energy conversion and contribute to a sustainable future.

One of the grand challenges facing humankind is connected to access to energy. We aim to develop a fundamental understanding of key processes on the atomic level related to energy conversion in renewable energy systems. We investigate new materials and specifically focus on the conversion between solar energy, electrical energy, and chemical energy in applications such as solar cells, batteries, fuel cells and catalysis/photocatalysis.

By investigating these processes at the atomic level, we aim to uncover the fundamental mechanisms that drive energy conversion. Much of the research concerns investigations into complex interfaces and charge dynamics using new opportunities with X-ray based spectroscopies that we develop and implement in the home lab as well as at large-scale facilities. Our research not only advances scientific knowledge but also has the potential to lead to significant technological innovations. We aim to push the boundaries of what is possible in energy materials research, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
