Description

Project title: Atomically thin metallenes for sustainable energy solutions (AMSES)
Main applicant: Harriet Åhlgren, Materials Physics
Grant amount: SEK 4 280 000 for the period 2027-2030

The project Atomically thin metallenes for sustainable energy solutions (AMSES) at the Division of Materials Physics at Uppsala University focuses on the discovery of new materials targeted towards sustainability. During the timeline of four years the project will realise new atomically thin two dimensional metals, metallenes, that have not been studied before. Metallenes comprise of metal atoms in a two dimensional phase, resembling materials like graphene, however with unique properties not found elsewhere. They will be synthesised employing recently developed ion beam methodology guided by state-of-the art atomistic simulations. The project will determine metallene’s unique crystallisation dynamics by careful characterisation in-situ with various spectroscopy and microscopy methods at the atom scale and create an in-depth understanding of the systems. The developed structures will be applied in measurements of electrical characterisation and catalytic activity paving the way for completely new metallene based nanodevices. These fundamental scientific goals will establish a strong foundation for metallene research and contribute to the renewal of science, allowing new innovations and discoveries for sustainable technologies. The project is lead by the PI and employs two postdoctoral researchers together with local and international collaborators. The project is supported by local infrastructure at the Division’s research facilities, the Tandem Laboratory and myFab Uppsala.
