The event seeks to continue the discussion around poetry’s potential to mobilize civil disobedience initiated during the International Interdisciplinary Symposium “Poetry as Political Resistance,” organized by the same applicants at Uppsala University, IRES (2020). The international attention attracted by the symposium signaled that there is substantial interest among members of the scholarly community, within Uppsala Forum, as well as the larger public, in the topic of poetry and political resistance in Eastern Europe.

The event will conclude with the planning of a publication (collection of articles or journal issue) on the theme of the symposium.

Several invited researchers have published widely in the field of artistic and aesthetic dissent, underground literature, samizdat, civil self-organization and political activism. Some of the invited participants have themselves participated in underground publications and dissident activities. Their first-hand testimonies will provide a vital real-life dimension to the scholarly discussions.
