Printing grants from the Vilhelm Ekman University Fund
The purpose of this fund is to encourage the publication of scholarly works authored by permanently employed teachers at Uppsala University. Retired teachers, docents, Library staff, and other staff (including retirees) are also welcome to apply.
The works must be based on the applicant’s own research and may be published in the form of
- monographs
- articles
- anthologies.
Other eligible works:
- Scholarly editions of texts and documents may be eligible for publication support, provided that the edition includes commentary or footnotes.
- Popular science texts may be eligible if they build on the applicant’s own research.
Who is eligible to apply to the Vilhelm Ekman Fund
- Permanently employed teachers (professors and senior lecturers) at Uppsala University, including retirees. A senior lecturer must hold a doctorate based on completed examinations (or the equivalent) or be an honorary doctor (doctor honoris causa).
- Library staff and other staff (including retirees) at Uppsala University’s academic departments. Such staff must hold a doctorate based on completed examinations (or the equivalent) or be an honorary doctor.
- Active docents at Uppsala University, i.e. docents who can demonstrate regular engagement in teaching or research at the University. Eligibility applies whether the docent is currently employed or retired.
Conditions
- Grants are normally awarded only for part of the total cost.
- Do not begin printing the book until your application has been reviewed. You should therefore submit your application well in advance of publication, but not before reliable information on production/publication costs is available and you have a realistic date for when the manuscript will be ready for printing.
- Indicate the amount requested, as well as whether you have applied for or received funding from other sources.
- Funding is provided for publication costs. Grants may also cover translation costs (including proofreading). To receive payment for such costs, you must submit an invoice. If your application does not include a final publishing contract, a copy must be provided before the grant is paid out.
- If you are applying for a book to be published as part of Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis (AUU), please specify which series it will appear in and attach permission to publish from the series editor.
- Attach a quotation to your application. If the application is for a book in any of the AUU series, include a quotation from UUP Bokproduktion.
- No printing grants are awarded for doctoral theses.
Disbursement
According to the decision of the Board for the Vilhelm Ekman University Fund (17 November 2004, § 5):
- There is a two-year window (from the decision date) in which the approved grant can be used. The applicant must request the funds within this period.
- Three copies of each monograph or anthology published with the Fund’s support must be sent to the Board’s secretary. (If the funded book is part of an AUU series, you do not need to submit copies.)
- For books published by AUU, the approved grant is disbursed when the applicant is invoiced for printing costs. This also applies to works self-published by the applicant.
- For books published by external (commercial) publishers, the publisher normally requests the grant when delivering the three required copies of the book. If the publisher needs the funds sooner, it must justify why it requires early payment.
- Grants awarded for purposes other than printing costs are paid out upon presentation of an invoice.
- If you do not use the approved grant, you must inform the Board for the Vilhelm Ekman University Fund as soon as possible.
Application
Applications to the Vilhelm Ekman University Fund are submitted via the form below.
- You are responsible for ensuring your application is complete and submitted on time. Late applications will be considered in the next round. Incomplete applications are declined.
- The application must include all the details required to meet the Fund’s conditions (see above).
- If you are submitting an anthology or edited collection, please list the authors and titles of all contributions. You may include short abstracts for each article. You must provide evidence of eligibility for all authors where relevant. Not all authors in a collection need to be eligible, but grants are only awarded in proportion to the share of authors who qualify.
- Eligibility can, for example, be demonstrated with an official document showing employment at Uppsala University or with a letter from the head of department confirming eligibility.
- If you wish, you may also attach manuscripts and/or letters of recommendation.
