“We want to talk about how we can adapt effectively in Sweden to cope with future extreme weather events at local level,” says Gabriele Messori.

Extreme climate events such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall are becoming more frequent and more severe in Sweden. What do we know about the consequences of future extreme weather in Sweden? Are Sweden and its municipalities ready? This is the theme of one of the seminars organised by Uppsala University at Almedalen.

The seminar is part of Uppsala University’s Climate Day in Almedalen. The panel is made up of Gabriele Messori, Professor of Meteorology, Mikael Karlsson, Associate Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences and Christofer Laurell from Länsförsäkringars Forskningsstiftelse.

“We want to talk about climate change, extreme weather and how we can adapt effectively in Sweden to cope with future extreme weather events at local level,” says Messori. “Climate change and extreme weather affect us all, in Sweden and across the world. This makes it important to talk to responsible politicians and officials about how we can adapt and prepare for future extreme weather.”

Who are you aiming to reach?

“We are keen to meet interested members of the public, citizens who may be curious about ongoing climate adaptation measures in the places they live. But also local politicians and municipal officials – the people whose job it is to implement local climate adaptation measures – and national politicians who might gain some insight into the difficulties faced by local politicians and officials in their climate adaptation efforts,” says Messori.
