How is the transition of Gotland shipping and ferry services progressing, and can collaboration between academia and industry drive developments forward? This is the theme of one of Uppsala University’s seminars at Almedalen. Researcher Björn Samuelsson is one of the participants.
What challenge do you want to highlight in this seminar?
“In this seminar, we want to address the challenge of how to get industry and academia to find common ground, collaborate and leverage each other’s expertise in today’s major research challenges. And one of the big challenges we face in our time is, of course, the green transition.
“Here we have a very good example of the potential for collaboration – how we at Uppsala University have collaborated and continue to collaborate with Gotlandsbolaget to find solutions for making future ferry services to Gotland fossil-free.”
Why is this an important issue?
“It’s extremely important, because shipping is one of the sectors of society that’s lagging the furthest behind in the transition. There isn’t a single obvious solution that fits all shipping, instead we have to find solutions that work in different segments. And in this case, ferry services to and from Gotland is an exciting segment that needs to be addressed.”
Who are you hoping to meet at Almedalen?
“We want to meet a broad range of industry representatives. We want to meet our colleagues in academia, and of course we want to meet interested members of the public.”
