Xingqi Chen awarded the Eric K. Fernström Swedish Prize 2026

Xingqi Chen, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, has been named the recipient of the Eric K. Fernström Swedish Prize. The prize will be presented during "Forskningens dag" (Research Day) in Lund on 4 November.
The Eric K. Fernström Swedish Prize is awarded to young, particularly promising and successful researchers at medical faculties in Sweden. Xingqi Chen is receiving the prize for his work in developing methods that have contributed to new insights into the epigenetic mechanisms underlying cancer and other diseases.

“Xingqi Chen has made groundbreaking contributions to epigenetics by developing and establishing technologies that have made it possible to study genome regulation with high precision. Several of these methods, including the single-cell technology ATAC-see, are now widely used internationally. He was the first to enable epigenomic analysis of archived clinical samples, which has opened the way for studies of long-term stored material. These methods have contributed to new insights into the epigenetic mechanisms underlying cancer and other diseases. Overall, his work has significantly deepened our understanding of chromatin biology and its role in disease development.”

To young and promising researchers
The Eric K. Fernström Swedish Prize is awarded to young, particularly promising and successful researchers who have not yet reached the age of 45 and who are based at a Swedish medical faculty. The medical faculties in Umeå, Uppsala, Stockholm, Linköping, Gothenburg and Lund each select one winner. The prize money amounts to 100,000 kronor each.
The prize will be presented on “Forskningens dag" (Research Day) in Lund on 4 November, which this year has the theme “Diabetes – from science to everyday life”.
