Behavioural tests for mice

Within UUBF, we regularly work with mice. Below, you can find a summary of available behavioural tests at UUBF.
Available tests
Barnes maze
Test for spatial learning and memory.
Conditioned place preference/avoidance (CPP/CPA)
Test with two contextually different compartments for studies of conditioned place preference (CPP) or conditioned place avoidance (CPA).
Elevated plus maze (EPM)
Elevated plus maze test for studies of risk-taking behaviour/anxiety-like behavior.
Hot plate
Test for nociceptive pain.
Inclined plane
Motoric assessment of the ability of the animal to remain on a tilting plane.
Light/dark box
Test for studies of avoidance of approaching a light compartment (anxiety-like behavior) or conditioned place preference (CPP).
Locobox version 5.6
The activity cage consists of a wooden box with frames of photocells around the walls.
Multivariate concentric square field™ (MCSF)
The Multivariate concentric square field™ (MCSF) test for studies of general activity, exploration, risk assessment, risk-taking and shelter-seeking behavior. Generates a behavioural profile. Can be modified for studies of avoidance learning, hole board exploration and motivation towards social reward, respectively, in rats. Additional applications under development.

Neonatal behaviours
Test battery including ultrasonic vocalisations upon separation from mother, home nest finding, novel cage exploration and threat-induced defensive freezing/immobilisation, respectively.
Novel object recognition
The novel object recognition test is based on the natural behaviour of animals to spend more time exploring a novel, rather than a familiar, object.
Open field
Open field test for studies of general locomotor activity and risk-taking behaviour/anxiety-like behaviour depending on level of illumination. Circular arena, diameter 90 cm. A start cage can be attached enabling measures of latency in first entering the arena as well as duration of shelter seeking.
Operant/Skinner boxes
An operant or Skinner box is a device for experimental studies of animal behaviour, particularly learning and operant conditioning. The box is named after its inventor, the behavioural psychologist BF Skinner. The box have mechanisms (e.g., levers or holes for nose poking) that the animal can use to provoke incidents. For example, the mechanism can be designed so that the animal is served food every time it touches a button. Can also be setup to deliver IV-self administration of drugs of abuse. 4 boxes available.
Radial arm maze
Test for spatial learning and memory. 8-arm radial maze.
Rotarod
The Rotarod test is a performance test based on a rotating rod with forced motor activity being applied, usually by a rodent. The Rotarod test measures parameters such as riding time or endurance. The Rotarod test can evaluate balance and coordination; especially in testing the effect of experimental drugs.
Social interaction
Various possibilities for studies of social interaction in adolescent ("play behaviour") and adult animals.
Tail flick
Test for nociceptive pain.
Tread scan V3.0 gait parameters
Tread Scan can perform automated gait analysis on a animal that moves on a treadmill with a clear bottom. The system can handle adjustments for uphill/downhill simulation or user-defined speeds up to 100 cm/s.
Von Freys hairs
Von Freys hairs for sensory testing.
Water maze
Test for spatial learning and memory in water.
Y/T-maze
Test for spontaneous alternation or rewarded alternation in a Y- or T-shaped maze.
