CEDAR

The database is built at the Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR), Umeå University.

CEDAR stands for The Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research and is a unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Umeå University. CEDAR has two sections: CEDAR Research (CEFO) and the Demographic Database (DDB). While the DDB was set up as early as 1973, CEDAR as a whole is a more recent organization (2015).

The DDB ‘has a long experience of database construction and methodological development’ (from the CEDAR website). With this in mind, Maria Ågren contacted Sören Edvinsson in 2007 and asked him whether the DDB would be able and interested in developing a new historical database tailor-made for the GaW project and its verb-oriented method. Between 2008 and 2010, the DDB developed the first version of the GaW database, including the registration tool. Between 2011 and 2013, the retrieval/search tool was created. Between 2017 and 2024, CEDAR made a significant upgrade of the whole GaW database and its web-based tools.

The persons working with the new version of the database are listed below.
