Interwar Wage Database

The Swedish Interwar Wage Database (SIWD) is a plant-level database covering primarily manufacturing plants in Sweden in 1922, 1924, 1926, 1928, 1930, 1932, 1934, and 1936. It covers wages for an excess of 11,000 individual plants and a total of 731,000 workers.

The database contains information on wages, hours worked, numbers of workers and types of workers (by gender and age).

Material and data collection

The database is based on the micro-data from the official wage statistics from Statistics Sweden. They have been transcribed by hand and each plant is geocoded according to one of the 24 historical counties of Sweden.

The dataset contains the following variables: Hours worked (by piece-work, salaried work and overtime), aggregate of wages paid (by piece work, salaried work, overtime and in-kind), plant-id, county, number of workers (by male, female and minors). The hours and wages are divided between male, female and minor workers.

William Skoglund is the main curator of the database.
