The Do-It-Yourself Studio

Come to our studio at the BMC and record your lectures or other educational materials. You focus on the content, and we take care of the technology.

The studio is booked on a half-day basis, at 9–12 or 13–16.

Here is how it works

Bring your presentation on a USB, or make sure it is digitally available. We'll help you get started, and then you'll deliver the lecture with your presentation as support. Afterwards, we will edit the material and send the finished film to you.

Who can use the studio?

Those who create teaching materials related to education at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. We are a resource and do not incur additional costs for the commissioning unit.

You control the recording yourself

You start and stop the recording yourself. Choose to record everything in one take or a little at a time. Possibility of reshoots. Switch between three different image views:

  • Full camera image
  • Camera image and presentation
  • Presentation only

Collected tips for recording

What you want to do? What do you want to achieve and what will it lead to? And what are the conditions for preparation?

Think about how to capture the student's interest. Start with a question that is interesting, recognizable and engaging - perhaps a little provocative. Or start with a compelling story.

Structure and organize your presentation in shorter sections, preferably in 15-minute parts.

When is it appropriate to take a break? Do you have a cliff-hanger for the next section, perhaps a question that the audience is curious about and can think about before moving on.

Why?

  • Easier for the student to navigate the material - and find sections to review.
  • Easier for you to update, add and remove material.
  • Promote variety - not all modules have to be of the same media.
  • Combine short films with tasks.
  • We can help you with subtitles, see the Accessibility section below.

What do your pages look like? Do you have a lot of text on the pages? Try to find keywords and images that reinforce your message. Students should listen to you and not read a lot of text at once.

Our eyes are drawn to things that are big and moving. By making important things big on your slide, you can direct the viewer's eye there. Similarly, you can animate one image or point at a time to direct the viewer's focus.

Feel free to bring along any props, models, tools, etc. that you want to show or explain how they work.

Do you have a movie that shows something related to your lecture? Bring it along and we will embed it in your lecture.

There are different ways to activate the viewer. For example, you can ask questions before the film starts:

  • Let's go through this, what do you want to know?
  • Think about...

And after the film, you can ask:

  • Did you get what you were thinking before?
  • Has your perception changed?
  • What are you taking with you?
  • What do you need to know more about?

Along the way, you can stop at natural points in the material and ask questions:

  • What do you think about what we just talked about?
  • What are your own reflections?
  • What we talked about now, what do you think about it in relation to the profession and your personal opinions, prejudices, beliefs.
  • What do you need to do now?

You can also call the student to action:

  • Now make your own summary before moving on to the next section.

All university video productions must have subtitles and be audio-described.

Subtitles

Use Studium's video platform Studio, tab Subtitles. There you can generate an automatic subtitle for your movie. When it is ready, you need to review and edit.

Audio description

Audio description is primarily done through verbalization. This means talking about what you are showing.

  • Introduce yourself verbally and not just with a name tag. If you are out filming, tell us the context in which you are, for example: I am standing here in the test lab at BMC.
  • When recording a lecture, tell us what the slides in your presentation show. For example, if you have a diagram, describe in words as clearly as possible what the diagram shows so that even those who cannot see can understand the information.
