Differentiating between work and study
It is common for many doctoral students to be offered some form of faculty work such as administration or teaching alongside their regular studies. Work outside the doctoral studies may not take up more than a certain portion of a doctoral student’s study time:
- For doctoral students, faculty duties may not take up more than 20 per cent of a full-time post (chapter 5 section 2 Higher Education Ordinance, HEO [Högskoleförordningen, HF].
Teacher training and other work life experience is desirable for many doctoral students. But as the net study period does not provide room for faculty duties it is important to differentiate between the time that is devoted to the doctoral study programme and time devoted to faculty work. The duration of the study programme (net study period) should, in other words, be extended by the amount of time the student works for the faculty, and the simplest way is to regulate this is in the individual study plan. Before taking on faculty work, doctoral students should be clear about the scope of the work and whether he/she will be remunerated in time. This also applies for certain types of positions of trust.
