Grading scales for first- and second cycle courses and programmes

The Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) states that a grade shall be awarded on completion of a course and that the higher education institution may determine which grading system is to be used (Chapter 6, Section 18).

Decision

It is hereby decided:

  • that Uppsala University will use the grading scales below;
  • that this decision applies from 23 October 2018;
  • that the decisions taken by the Vice-Chancellor on 21 December 2010, numbered UFV 2010/1969 and UFV 2010/1968, are rescinded from 23 October 2018.

Each faculty decides which of the grading scales below will be used in that faculty. The syllabus for a course must always specify which grading scale will be used for that particular course. The grading scale must be decided when the syllabus is approved.

The grading scales below are used at Uppsala University:

  • Fail (U), Pass (G)
  • Fail (U), Pass (G), Pass with distinction (VG)
  • Fail (U), Pass (3), Pass with credit (4), Pass with distinction (5)
  • Fail (U), Pass (B), Pass with credit (Ba), Pass with distinction (AB)
  • Fail (F), Sufficient (E), Satisfactory (D), Good (C), Very good (B) Excellent (A)

The syllabus must specify the course goals, formulated as intended learning outcomes. The goals describe the requirements for a passing grade. The requirements for higher grades must be formulated in terms of increasing levels of quality of goal attainment.

The formal decision to adopt these guidelines was taken, in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, by the undersigned Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the presence of Deputy University Director Per Abrahamsson, following a presentation of the matter by Deputy Head of Division Cilla Häggkvist. The President of the Uppsala Student Union, Ludvig Lundgren, was also present.
