Following your exchange studies

Transfer of course credits

Credits from courses you have taken at a university abroad can usually be transferred and applied towards a degree at Uppsala University. This means in principle that they will be 'translated' into courses or sub-courses included in the Uppsala University course offering. However, there are a few things to be aware of in this regard:

  • The credits from your studies will not automatically be transferred to the Ladok system [Swedish student registration and grading system]. You have to apply for such a transfer.
  • Courses taken abroad must not be transferred if you do not need them for your degree. The grades (transcript) you receive at a foreign university are valid in Sweden as well, e.g. with CSN [Swedish Board of Student Finance].

We cannot enter any grades in Ladok in connection with credit transfers at present. However, when applying for a job or other academic programmes, you can generally use the original certifications from your studies abroad as a supplement.

Application for credits transfer

The Department of Government accepts the transfer of credits only from studies abroad in Political Science and Development Studies as part of a course. In order to have your course credits transferred, you must apply using a special credits transfer form. An original official transcript of completed courses (which will be returned to you after the process is completed) or a certified copy thereof must be enclosed along with the application.

If you wish to have credits from courses transferred as part of a general degree (entire course), you must apply to the Studentavdelningen [Student Support Services] at Uppsala University.

Please e-mail any questions concerning the transfer of credits from studies abroad to the Studentavdelningen at tillgodo@uu.se.

It may take some time to receive a response to your application to transfer credits. It is therefore important to apply well before you are due to get your degree.

CSN

If you have received student financing from CSN during your studies abroad, it is important that you submit a record of your learning outcomes to them. If you have received student financing for one term of full-time studies, CSN will want a transcript showing that you have earned the equivalent of at least 22.5 college credits. Note that you have to do this regardless of whether or not you are transferring the credits from your studies at Uppsala University.

Travel report

Upon returning home, you must submit a travel report to the Department of Government. It is a good idea for the report to include personal experiences derived from the courses you have taken, the university and the city. Feel free to offer practical tips for those who will be attending the university in question in the future.

Course registration for the term following your return home

Be aware that you will need to register for courses for the term after your term abroad while you are still an exchange student.
