Student Valborg Celebrations in Uppsala

Valborg is the largest student celebration of the year in Uppsala and is characterised by traditional elements such as picnics in Ekonomikum Park, the cap ceremony at Carolina Hill, the raft race, and spring singing at the Gunilla Bell.

The running of the falls

The running of the race begins at 10:00 and is one of the most well-attended events of Valborg. A large number of self-built rafts, in a wide variety of shapes and colours, make their way down the River Fyris, passing both the Kvarnfallet and Islandsfallet rapids.

The event dates back to the mid‑1970s and is today organised by the Uppsala Association of Engineering and Science Students (UTN). Over the years, the raft race has developed into a popular public celebration attracting visitors of all ages.

Cap ceremony at Carolina Hill

At exactly 15:00 on Walpurgis Eve, the Vice‑Chancellor raises their white cap and greets the assembled crowd, who respond by waving back and putting on their student caps.

Orphei Drängar on the steps of Carolinas Rediviva

Like many traditions, Valborg celebrations in Uppsala have evolved over time. Since 2016, the choir Orphei Drängar has performed on the steps of Carolina Rediviva, directly following the cap ceremony. Previously, the choir performed indoors in the University Main Hall and outdoors in the University Park.

Spring songs and the Adress sång at Gunilla Bell

The tradition at the Gunilla Bell dates back to the 19th century. The spring address, broadcast on radio since 1926, is today delivered by the curator curatorum. At 21:00, the Gunilla Bell rings and the choir Allmänna Sången, the oldest academic choir in the Nordic countries, performs for residents and visitors alike.
