About the course

The course gives in-depth knowledge about the structure and function of pathogenic viruses and bacteria with an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms controlling pathogenesis. The defence mechanisms of the host, as well as the possibilities of the invading pathogens to evade these, are discussed in detail. The focus lies on a number of medically important viruses and bacteria. Practical exercises give experience and knowledge about experimental techniques to study the host-pathogen interplays.

The course is divided into Bacteriology and Immunology (15 credits) and Virology (15 credits). The course equals the first semester of the Master's Programme in Infection Biology.
