Spring 2024

Rohit Joseph Mamutil, student from India
There is no shortage of talent or opportunities here. And if you are lucky, you can even enjoy the Northern lights from the comfort of your window.
How did you choose your programme?
– After my Bachelor’s studies in computer science, I worked in the field of embedded systems, which is usually dominated by graduates of electrical or electronics engineering. I once believed it would be difficult for me to pursue a formal degree in this area. However, when I discovered the Master’s Programme in Embedded Systems at Uppsala University, which has a strong focus on software, I was thrilled. Discovering a programme that welcomed students with a CS background was a moment of joy for me.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– Uppsala strikes the perfect balance between being lively and calm. You will meet brilliant people from all around the globe across disciplines such as law, medicine, engineering, and music. There is no shortage of talent or opportunities here. And if you are lucky, you can even enjoy the Northern lights from the comfort of your window.
Was there anything you found difficult or surprising when you started your studies at Uppsala University?
– Choosing the right courses and meeting entry requirements for them was initially challenging. The biggest difference was the academic focus and evaluation style. Here, deep understanding is valued over memorisation, which I actually enjoy since I do not have a strong memory.
Describe the student life!
– Student life in Uppsala is a mix of hope, fear, struggle, and joy. The student nations are a unique privilege to the Uppsala students, strongly recommend it for parties, affordable food, and making memories. Then there is the ”Flogsta scream” could be strange at first, but somehow therapeutic and memorable.
– Of course, there are serious parts too, cooking meals, manage assignments, and sometimes struggle to balance everything.
Name three things you are doing this week!
– Visiting the installations around Uppsala during the Light Festival, progressing on assignments and discussing ideas for my thesis and attending hackathon organised by Uppsala AI Society.
What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– I aim to contribute significantly to the field of Embedded AI. Along the way, if I discover a promising opportunity, I would love to build my own solution and possibly start a business.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this programme?
– The field is vast, and many courses are electives. It helps a lot to have an idea of your interests beforehand so you can choose the most suitable courses.
What is your favourite place in Uppsala?
– There are many, including Kvarnbo, Trädkyrkan in Berthåga, and – above all – my own room, which has a beautiful view of the Castle and the Uppsala Cathedral (Domkyrkan).
Where is the best place to study?
– Anywhere you can clear your mind. I often study at home because I find it convenient, but I love staying back at the university after lectures to finish assignments – the study areas here are great.
Do you have any final reflections or comments?
– Compared to cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg, Uppsala is more affordable, which can be a big advantage. There is a lot of research going on here, though not all of it is well-publicised. As a new student, reaching out to professors and exploring their labs can open unexpected doors.
