Learning outcomes

The course turns to students who want to deepen their knowledge in the research subjects within studies in church and mission. The course thus constitutes a deepening continuation of the thematic B-course through his subject-specific, elective courses.

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • absorb and actively relate to church historical, ecclesiastical or missionary research-related work, both survey literature and scholarly monographs, and discuss them critically with a focus on perspectives, contents and wider context and theory and method
  • independently distinguish and process for the subjects relevant problems
  • argue for own positions in relation to the themes of the current modules
  • review and evaluate different positions in connection with the themes of the current modules critically
  • plan and carry out an oral talk in a for the course relevant subject for a listener group that not has specialist knowledge in the subject
  • participate actively in seminar discussions

Other alternatives within the frame of the course

Instead for above described alternative, the student can participate in field study travel with teaching in mission. This alternative can only be read combined with the C2-varianten with field study report/the 15 HE credits of essay.

In addition to above mentioned learning objectives tillkomma to be able to:

  • with relevant method carry out a field study work

Content

The course includes three modules in the subjects church history, ecclesiology and missionsvetenskap. Of these choose the student two. If the student has already read one of the modules on B2-level is chosen here modules that not have been read earlier. The student can also choose one of the courses in diaconal science that is stated below.

Church history

The church in the society and the culture 7.5 HE credits

The course gives an overview of the Christian churches history in our country from the christening period up to the 20th century. How did the church life look on the Middle Ages? Did the reformation imply a continuity or a crime with the past? How did the Lutheran united church grow forward? How turned out people lives in a society where the Lutheran ”hustavlan” and the educational system of the church has a strong position? How been shaped and consolidated the religious revivals and the Free Church movement in loyalty with or open criticism against the Lutheran faith of the church and orders? How did the church meet urbanisation, industrialisation, religious criticism and modernity? The development is studied in context with the general historical development on a national level and light up also the relations at local level in their divine services and piety of common people. Emphasis is placed at the interplay between religious, cultural, political and economical factors and such historical relations that can contribute to understanding of the relations of the churches and the societies today.

Ecclesiology

The church in the dogmatics and the placement 7.5 HE credits

The course focuses on the theological understanding of the Christian church in history and present. The church emerges then from a lot of aspects as various types of structured Christian community. The question is set if it is possible to talk about Christian faith but church and how the church can shape the faith. What being a charismatic community in relation to the view on the church as a sacrament? How does the way reveal to celebrate divine service which view on the church that the worshippers have? Here, feministic conceptions of church and liturgy why the Roman-Catholic church has a pope or how it comes are studied oneself that Pentecostal churches in Africa create own traditions. In the course, one also can learn why the church in New Testament came to be identified with Christ's body, what is meant with the people of God and how evangelism and ecclesiology can not be separated to. The international perspective gives understanding also of the Swedish context.

Mission

Church among cultures and religions 7.5 HE credits

The course deals with church in relation to different cultures, religions and social relations in a global perspective. A theoretical basis is post-colonial thinking, and the first part of the course gives an introduction to post-colonial studies. In the other part of the course, post¬koloniala perspectives on a number of texts about mission are applied, missionaries, churches and independent Christian in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Example of questions that are treated during the course is: Why did Protestant mission speed during the 18th century take? How did Swedish missionaries on the kastväsendet in India see? How can a Christian missionary criticism look? Can the church be a resistance movement against different forms of oppression? How does the relation see between mission and modernisation out indefinitely in the world?

Other alternatives within the frame of the course

As alternatives to above presented modules, the student can participate in field study travel with teaching (literature, method and field study), 15 HE credits in mission. This alternative of C1 course can only be read combined with the C2-varianten with field study report/the 15 HE credits of essay. Under the field study course, similar issues are processed as within the missionary research-related course Church, culture and religions but in the form of the field study.

Lectures and seminars.

Assessment

Oral test (7.5 HE credits), minor essays and oral presentation (7.5 HE credits).

Other regulations

For a course to be completed a minimum level of 75% attendance is required in all of the elements of the course described in the syllabus. Absence over and above this is to be compensated by compensatory task(s) as decided upon by the teacher responsible for the course.

Transitional provisions

Individuals that reading this course according to older course syllabus has possibility to examine course according to the course syllabus within two years after course date. If there are special reasons, such retake can take place also later. Normally, teaching according to older course syllabus is not given.
