The course can after decision in the Committee of Undergraduate Medical Education, 2010-09-30 also belong to the main field of study Use of drugs.
Entry requirements
For students in the Pharmacy programme, it is required that the student should have passed the courses Pharmacognosy, 7.5 credits and Pharmaceutical biotechnology, 3 credits and have achieved at least 150 credits within the programme and followed all earlier courses on semester 1-7. For students in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Programme, it is required that the student should have passed the courses Pharmacognosy and the origin of the drugs, 6 credits and Structure and Analysis of Drugs, 7.5 credits or the course Origin, Structure and Analysis of Drugs, 13.5 credits, and have achieved at least 120 credits within the programme and followed all earlier courses on semester 1-5. Qualified to the freestanding course are those that have knowledge equivalent to: a) Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science, 120 credits, supplemented by advanced courses within pharmacy of at least 22.5 credits or Pharmacognosy B, 15 credits. b) 150 credits including 120 credits in chemistry or biology and advanced courses within pharmacy of at least 22.5 credits or Pharmacognosy B, 15 credits. d) the equivalent knowledge within the subject area. Knowledge in Swedish and English equivalent to that required for basic level entry into Swedish higher education.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have sufficient knowledge to be able to evaluate and implement information about herbal remedies mainly within self-treatment and in accordance with science and best practice .
Content
Concepts, definitions and regulatory issues around the quality, effect and safety of herbal remedies are covered in depth. Aspects on quality control, clinical assessment and product documentation as well as issues around counselling and the role in self-treatment regarding herbal remedies, natural remedies and functional food products.
Instruction
The teaching takes place in the form of lectures, group assignments, literature assignment and seminars. Emphasis is placed on the student's own learning and ability to independently seek information and to solve problems.
Compulsory parts of the course: Course introduction, participation in certain lectures as per schedule and participation in group assignments and presentation of the literary study are compulsory parts.
Assessment
To pass the course, participation in compulsory parts and passed presentation of literature study, group assignments and written examination are required.
