Entry requirements
180 credits including (1) 80 credits in physics and mathematics or (2) 70 credits in earth science and 45 credits in physics and mathematics. In both cases Continuum Mechanics in Geophysics, 5 credits, and at least 2.5 credits from Introduction to Seismology. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for and critique the most important models for the relationship between friction and fracture propagation in rock.
- analyse the radiation patterns of seismic waves and the relationship with the source in terms of the momentum tensor.
- calculate absolute and relative localizations of earthquakes.
- evaluate focal mechanisms and moment tensors developed with different methods and compare the results.
- account for and simulate synthetic seismograms.
- explain seismic risk assessment.
Content
Brittle fracturing of rock, friction in rock, fault mechanics, pore pressure effects, earthquake mechanics, Green's functions for elastic waves. Earthquake detection. Absolute and relative localization of earthquakes. Estimation of focal mechanisms and moment tensors. Modelling of the earthquake source and seismic waves. Synthetic seismograms. Induced seismicity. earthquake forecasts and risk assessments.
Instruction
Lectures, exercises and seminar presentations.
Assessment
Homework assignments (4 credits) and seminar presentation (1 credit).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
