Entry requirements

120 credits in science/engineering. Participation in Introduction to Materials Science (10 credits), Chemical Bonding in Molecules and Materials and Introduction to Materials Synthesis and Characterisation. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Analyze the components of the hydrogen cycle and its advantages and disadvantages.
  • Compare different experimental methods that provide information on the structure, composition, and chemical structure of hydrogen in materials.
  • Analyze processes and calculate relevant quantities for hydrogen in materials.
  • Characterize material properties of materials relevant to the hydrogen economy.
  • Reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of the hydrogen economy.

Content

The course gives fundamental knowledge about hydrogen cycle, which involve production, energy storage, and the usage of hydrogen in fuel cells. The structure of the hydrogen molecule and dissociation energy, sustainable production of hydrogen using electrolysis and using biological methods and their efficiency limitations, hydrogen storage in metals and other materials, enthalpy, entropy, Gibb's free energy, isotherms, electrochemical reactions associated with electrolysis and fuel cells, the hydrogen cycle, life cycle analysis, electronic binding of hydrogen in materials, methods of measurements

Assessment

Written examination (3 credits) and hand-in exercises (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
