Game Design 2 - Game Development, 7.5 credits

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  • design and develop 3D game levels, using intentionality in design and valuing factors which affect player comprehension
  • understand and analyse 3D level design from both a perspective of game design and specifically level design
  • conduct iterative testing to facilitate the development of a 3D game
  • apply sustainable teamwork principles and methods for game development to achieve team goals in a complex 3D game development project
  • understand and value dependencies, priorities and bottlenecks in the context of complex 3D game development projects.

Content

Students study some of the roles that the design of game environments and levels play in game design: Levels as a learning environment, as a tool for storytelling, as a collection of geometry and as a set of game objectives. Students are introduced to level design concepts and theories, and then apply these concepts through production. In teams students develop a 3D game with a focus on creating an interactive game level in 3D. Through iterative testing, students refine the project. Students also develop their ability to communicate with the player by utilizing storytelling techniques as well as level design techniques.

Instruction

Instruction takes the form of lectures, workshops and seminars.

Assessment

Assessment is of seminars in the form of continuous assessment during the project and in a demonstration of a playable game.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.
