Human Trafficking - how can we cooperate to make a change?

Human Trafficking

Trafficking persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims.

UNODC, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto, assists States in their efforts to implement the protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons. There is a strong need for competent legal representation in the judicial matters involving victims of human trafficking. The quality of legal aid is an essential component in achieving access to proper justice by the victims.

Countries as Romania and Bulgaria are one of the main origin states for victims of human trafficking and the number of specialized lawyers to protect their rights in the judicial proceedings is an insufficient one.

The need to train lawyers and increase the number of victims represented by specialized legal practitioners is an important aspect that stays at the basis of the project’s development.

November 7 U-FOLD organizes a seminar focusing on this problem collecting participants from both Romania and Bulgaria but also from other European Countries as Germany and Sweden. Our aim is to highlight this problem with a particular focus on the role of addictive drugs in the actual issue.
