Professor in Medical Bacteriology
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University offers a broad, international environment for research and teaching in a creative and open atmosphere. Research at the department is conducted within three interacting sections: Biochemistry and Cancer, Infection and Immunity, and Genetics and Genomics. IMBIM provides extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with leading research environments at Uppsala University, including the Uppsala Antibiotic Center, ENABLE-2, and the SciLifeLab research infrastructure. IMBIM will lead a new national strategic research area in antimicrobial resistance, which will be established later this year.
Description of the subject area
This subject area covers antimicrobial resistance, bacterial pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, or bacterial physiology. We welcome candidates with expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, infection biology, and large-scale molecular methods, including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, or microbiome research.
Duties
The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for research and doctoral education within the field of Medical Bacteriology, as well as supervision and teaching at first, second and third cycle levels. The position includes leading an active international research group in the field, and contributing to the positive development of research and education within the subject area in collaboration with the Faculty's researchers and teachers. Administrative duties, as well as internal and external positions of trust, may be included in the position. The position also includes disseminating information about research and development activities. The duties further include following developments within the candidate's own field and developments in society at large that are of relevance to the work of the University.

Academic teacher training shall include doctoral supervisor training. (AR Section 32).
The applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish or English. See AR Section 6.
Assessment criteria
In selecting qualified applicants, greater importance will be placed on research expertise than on teaching expertise. However, a balanced assessment will be made so that an applicant with significantly greater teaching expertise can be ranked ahead of an applicant with a slight advantage in terms of research expertise.
Research expertise refers to qualifications as a researcher. In the assessment of research expertise, research quality shall be the primary consideration. The scope of research, particularly in terms of depth and breadth, will also be assigned significance. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, the ability to secure research funding competitively, and the ability to engage with the wider society through research. (AR Section 20) Cf. Section 3 of the Guidelines and Assessment Criteria for Recruitment and Promotion within the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (GA).
Pedagogical expertise refers to qualifications in teaching and learning. In the assessment of teaching expertise, quality shall be the primary consideration. Scope, both in terms of breadth and depth, shall also be considered. In addition, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to link education to research are assigned significance. Teaching expertise includes the ability to interact with stakeholders within and outside the University on issues related to learning and teaching in higher education, (AR Section 22) Cf. Section 4 GA.
Assessment criteria; other proficiency
Applicants must demonstrate scientific excellence in experimental approaches, experience of interdisciplinary collaboration, and a strong track record in supervision and teaching.
Administrative and leadership skills are important qualifications for the position and will be given weight in the assessment. The ability to engage with the wider community, as well as to communicate research and development activities, will also be taken into consideration.
Administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in a suitable and effective manner, as well as the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality. See also sections 28 AR and section 5 GA.
Management expertise is demonstrated through ability to lead operations and staff, make decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for the effective achievement of common objectives. Ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated. See also sections 30 AR and section 5 GA.
When assessing collaboration expertise, importance will be attached to experience and demonstrated ability in public outreach and science communication, editorial work, and other activities relating to knowledge exchange between the University and the wider community, as well as experience of innovation and entrepreneurship. (GA Section 6).
In an overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, trade union responsibilities, military service or similar activities are to be treated as work experience. (AR Section 94).
When the University appoints new teachers, it must select the applicants who, following a qualitative overall assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to perform and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the positive development of the department. (AR Section 4).
The gender equality aspect must be applied in an appointment process if it is evident following a qualitative assessment that two applicants of different gender have equal or approximately equal qualifications and if one gender is underrepresented (constitutes less than 40% of those in the occupational category in question and at the workplace concerned). (AR Section 95).
All qualifications must be documented so that both quality and degree can be assessed.
During the evaluation of submitted applications, international referees may be used. In this event, the University may need to send applications that are written in Swedish to a qualified translator.
In the event of any disagreement between the English and the Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.
