When you are here at Ångström Laboratory, we warmly recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the installations and exhibitions that are in various places in the house.

Foucaults pendulum

There are four Foucault pendulums in Sweden, one of which is here at Ångström Laboratory. You will find it in the atrium of building 10, near the main entrance and reception. Foucault's pendulum is named after the French physicist Jean-Bernard-Léon Foucault (1819 – 1868).

A Foucault pendulum consists of a heavy ball attached to a long wire so that it can exert its pendulum motion with as little friction as possible. After a while it no longer moves in the same direction as where it started. This is because the Earth has meanwhile rotated on its axis.

Here at the Ångström Laboratory, the cable is 28 meters long and the pendulum has an electromagnetic drive so that it never stops.

The Explanatorium

Welcome to discover science, technology and mathematics! The exploratory exhibition consists of both a historical and an interactive part. Here you can experience research and science examples by feeling, experiencing and performing.

You find the Explainatorium in building 1 on floor 1, a couple of minutes' walk from the main entrance in building 10.

The sphere gap

Adjacent to the southern entrance you will find a so-called sphere gap. They are two large copper balls hammered by hand by an tinsmith from Uppland. Sphere gaps are used to measure very high voltages. This particular sphere gap was used in the high-voltage laboratory in Husbyborg, Uppsala.

Mirror component from CERN

Near the Siegbahn hall is a mirror component in the form of a big wheel that was part of the RICH detector used in the DELPHI experiment at CERN's large accelerator LEP in Geneva during the years 1993-2001. The RICH detector was used to identify the velocity, mass and identity of various particles. The DEPHI experiment contributed to creating a significantly more detailed picture of the smallest constituents of matter – the quarks and leptons.
