Housing in Visby

Finding a place to live in Sweden can be challenging, even for Swedish students, due to the high demand for rental housing. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you start looking as early as possible and explore different options.
If you are a fee-paying student at Uppsala University, you are guaranteed housing.
However, if you are not paying tuition fees, you will need to arrange your own accommodation. Make sure to plan ahead and explore available housing options well in advance.
Housing guarantee for fee-paying students
Uppsala University guarantees housing to all fee-paying Bachelor's and Master's students, including those who are scholarship recipients, through Uppsala University Housing Office.
To qualify for the housing guarantee, you must pay your tuition fee by the specified deadline. Once your payment is received, the Uppsala University Housing Office will email you with instructions on how to accept your housing offer.
As a fee-paying student, you will be provided with a fully furnished dormitory room in one of the student housing areas in the city. There are different housing options available, with room sizes ranging from 19 to 48 square meters. Some rooms have private kitchens and bathrooms, while others have shared facilities.
Please note that the housing guarantee only applies to individual students. Uppsala University does not provide housing for family members, so if you bring family members with you will need to arrange your own accommodation.
All other students, including non-fee-paying Bachelor's and Master's students, are responsible for finding their own housing while studying in Sweden.
Non-fee-paying students
If you are a non-fee-paying student from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you are responsible for arranging your own accommodation while studying at Uppsala University.
Finding housing can be highly competitive, especially in August and September, when demand is at its peak. To increase your chances of securing a place, it is essential to start your search as early as possible and be proactive.
Be prepared to invest time and effort into finding suitable accommodation, and explore multiple options to ensure you have a place to stay when your studies begin.
Below, you will find tips and guidance specifically compiled to help non-fee-paying students in their housing search.

Uppsala University does not own any student housing. Instead, accommodation is offered by various housing companies and private landlords in and around Visby, and students are responsible for arranging their own housing.
For new students, a good option is to rent a room or an apartment through a sublet. It is common for residents in Visby to rent out rooms in their homes or apartments to students.
Since most rental listings for the autumn semester become available from late spring to early summer, we strongly recommend starting your housing search as early as possible in late spring to increase your chances of finding a place.

Blocket
Other Ways to Find Housing
Blocket is a popular Swedish website where people buy and sell various items, but it also features rental listings, including sublets and private rentals. You can find available housing under the category "Bostad" (Housing).
Many students also find accommodation through social media platforms, such as Facebook Marketplace and housing-related Facebook groups.
Be aware of rental scams
Fraudulent housing listings are unfortunately common, especially at the start of the semester. To protect yourself from scams, never make any payments before a rental contract has been signed by both parties. Always verify the landlord and the rental terms before committing.
