Agency and Spirituality: Women's Contribution to the Shaping of Modernity in Sweden

The research project Agency and Spirituality: Women's Contribution to the Shaping of Modernity in Sweden is a collaborative project between Enskilda Högskolan Stockholm and Uppsala University/CRS. The aim of the project is to examine how religion and spirituality both enabled and challenged women's participation in public life between 1915 and 1935, an important period for shaping the emerging modernity in Sweden. The focus is on eight women who were active in politics, education, culture and who in various ways had connections to the Sigtuna Foundation and other religious meeting places to discuss social and cultural changes in the contemporary world. These are Gertrud Aulén, Hilma Borelius, Emilia Fogelklou, Anna Lindhagen, Jeanna Oterdahl, Anna Sörensen, Gunhild Tegen and Lydia Wahlström. Based on the women's publications and correspondence, the project examines how women shaped public discourse based on their spirituality and outlook on life in early 20th-century Sweden.
