U-CARE's PhD student Philip Leissner attends a writing residency in Gotland

PhD candidate Philip Leissner.
This week, U-CARE's PhD candidate Philip Leissner is participating in a writing residency in Fårö, Gotland. He will then live and work on the Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman's old property. During his stay, he will work on his dissertation.
– My dissertation is about how the world of cardiology can use knowledge in psychology, says Philip Leissner. It deals to a large extent about anxiety, but also depression and stress. This week I will write on the ‘kappa’ chapter, where important concepts are defined and the methods used in the thesis are described.
He explains that the residence at Bergmangårdarna is primarily for writers, filmmakers and artists, but also researchers at Uppsala University can apply for residence.
– This is my second year participating, and I am there with my supervisor Erik Olsson, and our colleagues Niclas Almén and Ulf Elofsson. I'm looking forward to a week of focused writing, as well as some culture and nice socializing.
What might a day at the writing residency look like?
– We start with a joint breakfast, then we all have slightly different programmes, but we tend to go to Bergman's old private house ‘Hammars’. There is no internet there, so it's a great place for writing without distractions. After lunch at the accommodation, we go back to Hammars and write until it's time for a joint dinner. In the evenings we might have coffee together or watch a film in Bergman's old private cinema. Before our trip to the residence, we make sure to buy properly of food and plan for the joint meals.
